The warning does not come from me, but from a recent McKinsey study. Already in the opening, there is the message: “The quantum computing ecosystem is expanding and emerging business use cases promise to create significant value for the business world. That is if executives prepare now.

The accelerated advances in quantum computing are happening, even if we prefer not to follow because it is a topic (apparently) distant from our daily lives. Even if we are not looking and acting, there are powerful indicators that this intriguing, as well as revolutionary, technology, is advancing. Quickly towards its commercial viability.

In recent months, for example, a research center in Japan has announced advances in error correction in quantum systems, making the production of large quantum computers on a commercial scale. A company in Australia has developed software that improves the performance of any quantum computing hardware, also contributing to the advancement of this industry on a commercial scale.

As these advances speed up, investment dollars are being invested and quantum computing startups are proliferating. Leading tech companies also continue to build on their quantum capabilities: companies like Alibaba, Amazon, IBM, Google, and Microsoft have already launched commercial quantum computing services in the cloud.
Of course, all this activity doesn’t translate into immediate business results. While quantum computing promises to help companies solve problems that are beyond the reach and speed of conventional high-performance computers, use cases are still experimental and hypothetical at this early stage.

Still, the activity suggests that chief information officers and other leaders who are listening to quantum computing news can no longer be mere spectators. Leaders should start formulating their quantum computing strategies now. The shift could take place as early as the next 5 or 7 years, as several companies predict that they will release usable quantum systems within that time.

There is an entire support ecosystem for this industry that is already being implemented. McKinsey’s research indicates that the value at stake for…
