Freedom requires activism

Everyday I run my computing devices with trustable free software. I can’t help but ponder if it will be possible to keep living like this in the future, not due free software disappearing, but because society can force us to have to run proprietary software, it is key we push against it.

Everyday, more people unknowingly run proprietary and insecure software, and everyday, banks and other key services require the user to install proprietary applications to be used. For school I must use the library’s computer since they need proprietary software (that is borderline spyware, rootkit) to be used for taking tests. What if one day the university does not provide a computer for me to use? I would have to buy one and then install that horrible software, which to anyone who respects their privacy and freedom, would render the device not theirs. Why do we have to have corporations not trust us but we have to trust them? It is because we have allowed them to… Society has worked the same functions without us running proprietary software before and can work without it.

We must push for corporations to come up with privacy respecting solutions for their products, otherwise they will push us into submission with proprietary software. There are alternatives that work and respect our freedom for almost everything our society is pushing us to use. You want a better zoom? Use Jitsi, do you want students taking tests cleanly? Use pen and paper. You want us to download a glorified banking app that asks for my location? No, allow me to use my bank account through your website. Today we can live free, tomorrow we might not if we don’t care enough today. Demand for freedom and respect.
