New Music Still Escaped Me

Learning from a place of vulnerability

The challenge to write
I told myself
was finding the right words to express.

Without these words
the music itself
would be less than meaningless.

Endless repetition
of melody and beats
with no message at all to speak.

So I wrote and created,
I found poetry in the lyric-making,
but new music still escaped me.

I thought of the notes
and I stared at a blank staff again,
unable to find the sound.

a prisoner of my own resistance
frozen in place
with no harmony to be found.

It physically hurt
when the music would struggle to play
as though the keys had slammed shut.

The notes stuck
as wheels in the mud
Digging deeper with every turn.

What was this holding me fixed
in much too open a place?
I must let the words breathe in new strains
not lie restless on the page.

But soon I would remember
as a child first learning
to hear the the song as a friend.

I can break the chains then,
the fear that holds me
and be open to new music again.

Being as vulnerable and open as a child learning to play piano for the first time
