Too Much or Too Little

We are in a time of change again. Many of us got used to a new way of working during the Covid lockdown, even if reluctantly at first. Others enjoyed it from the start whilst some railed against it.

What many had known intuitively all along is now becoming clear: We need to be seen and to be validated in the world; to be able to work and see how our efforts make a difference. Being in the gaze of others, receiving the glances of strangers, can be uplifting and life affirming. It’s an acknowledgment of our humanity. Isolation is perilous in this respect and can be dehumanising.

We need to be seen, we want to be needed and we long to be useful.

But now the brakes are being eased off our work and lives and a great awakening is occurring. With this comes the difficulty of integrating a way of life we got used to with an old way we might have almost forgotten.

People are saying this is an opportunity for addressing a work/life schedule that was out of kilter and unsustainable. Many are realising that they were rushing around too much before.

Too much and too little are the bookends to our existence. Managing the terrain in between is the great challenge of being human. Whether it’s work, socialising, food, drink, exercise, creative pursuits, intimacy, sex, alone time or partnered time, we need to strike the balance between the extremes of too much and too little.

The pendulum is swinging us back into a more active existence again. Now is the time to reflect on our life balance and to serve more healthy portion sizes of the things we have to do, the things we need to do, the things we want to do and the things we love to do.
