Eveline Perspective Essay

This perspective taking essay will analyze the character Eveline from the story, “Eveline” by James Joyce in which readers will discover how Eveline is a conflicted character in which she must make a decision to leave her family or start a new family. Further discoveries will show how Eveline is a representation of the obligations and responsibilities of the Irish women of this time period. In addition, Eveline is a character in which we readers all connect with because it shows how Eveline struggles with her own identity. This short story also acknowledges the good and bad things that families can go through. The following perspective is Eveline’s perspective in which she explains what happens and how the things in her past could lead her to the predicament to make a decision for her future.

He is standing a short distance away from me. The winds along the coast whipped his bronzed hair over his hidden eyes and his lips mouthed out my pet name. I couldn’t hear his tenor voice. His large scarred hand reached out to me, beckoning me to him. My heart hurt so much, I felt my body drop in temperature and I felt my spirit slowly drown in this morbid numbness.

My mind took its graceful journey to the past, recollecting the past moments that eventually lead to my traumatizing present. I scaled all the way back to a time where my place and duty was with my family. My father, my mother, and my many siblings were the only entities that haunted inside my little world I have known as a little girl.
