The three core parts of being successful

Often we get caught in the belief that enormously successful people have a special gift and that’s why they are successful. If you look closer you will find that the only difference between you and those very successful people is their ability to get into action.

It’s not because they know more than you do; they understand that knowledge without action does not bring any results. And that’s where the power is.

The good thing is that everybody can develop that gift and become very successful in their life or business. You might not be able to believe this yet, but read on, and it will become clearer.

It all starts with your mind

First, let’s clarify that your mind is not some external device you can switch on or off. It is part of you and responsible for the way you live your life.

If your mind works towards or against your success, it depends on its perspective to things that are happening every day.

Successful people have shown us over and over again that their success is not based on the things that are happening to them, but on their actions in response to what happens to them.

Creating success for yourself

If you look at it from some distance, you will see that nothing has any meaning, except the meaning we give to it. Successful people develop their minds to look at things in a successful way. It starts with the question: “How can I turn what just happened into something positive that furthers my success?”

They create the life they want to live by looking at the world around them from their perspective. It does not make them superhuman, but it puts them in control of their lives.

We all can develop this mindset, and you can start right now. Let me show you how.

Developing the right mindset and putting your ideas into action requires three core components:

• Decision

• Commitment

• Reflection

Let’s take a decision.

Of course, you need to decide on being successful. It might sound strange. Why would you need to choose to make a lot of money or have a perfect relationship? Who doesn’t want to make a lot of money and be with the love of their life?

Putting precision behind your decisions

But deciding to be successful requires us to commit to the actions needed to become successful. Many people struggle with that.

Making a decision covers many areas. One of them might be financial independence. Another one might be running a great business, having a great relationship or being a great parent.

Whatever it is you define as success needs to be precise. In which areas do you want to be successful?

If you struggle with other people at work and it starts wearing you down, the only way you can change that is by being clear about it and taking a decision to change it. It begins with changing your perspective towards them.

You can’t change them, but you can change the way you see them and the way you communicate with them. Most of the time we have no idea with what problems others struggle with and what causes them to behave as they do.

Define your direction

Successful people are masters in taking decisions that get them where they want to go. They understand and accept that they are in charge of their lives.

If you want to be successful, you need to do the same. Take charge of your mind and adjust your perspective of your life. Take a decision and define what success means to you.

Now commit to your success.

That is the hardest part. Yes, you have to commit to your decision. Your motto must be “Whatever it takes!” And I mean it literally.

And yes, it is hard work. Anyone telling you otherwise has no idea what they’re talking about.

Commitment is about focus, learning and full-on action. Commitment is also ‘no excuses’.

What are you prepared to sacrifice to be successful?

It means to make your decision the main part of your life, and every other part has to wait in line. If you’re building a successful business, it could mean no holiday for the first few years or long hours at work.

If you are working on being a great parent or partner, it could mean spending all your free time with your partner or children and working on your relationship instead of watching television and going out for a drink with friends.

It’s about committing to your success and doing anything you can to excel, grow and become the best you can be.

Successful people are relentless in pursuing their goals. They don’t make excuses.

But they also know that this takes effort and time. They are aware that they will get it wrong far more often than they get it right. They don’t pretend to know it all, but they are committed to learning what it takes to master it.

They commit to their success and take the necessary actions to make it happen.

Set your goal — and go for it!

You can do the same. There is no need for a degree, and there is no need to wait. Start by committing to one specific goal. Don’t assume you know it all, but remember that you will have to learn everything you need to make it work.

Let’s reflect on it all.

To make sure that you are on track you need to make some time to reflect on your actions and to improve your processes.

In practical terms, you need to review the results of your actions regularly and adjust them to stay on track in your chosen direction.

You are on a learning path, and a lot of things are happening at the same time. Successful people take time to reflect on their actions. They need to know how they feel about it. They ask questions like:

• Is it working?

• Do I act in the right direction?

• What else do I need to learn to become better at it?

• Are there any adverse effects of my actions I need to be aware of?

If you want to be successful, you’ll need to ask yourself those questions.

Plan for action

Lets put this all together and define a process to turn you into a successful person.

Step 1: Decide on your success

Choose an area of your life or business you want to become good at. Describe how your life will be different once you reach success in your chosen field. Write it down.

Step 2: Commit to act towards it

Make a list of the things you need to learn to master that part of your life or business. Now make a list of the things you need to do with whatever you learned. Describe the actions you’re going to take towards your success. Keep updating that list as you develop towards success.

Step 3: Reflect on your results

Make a daily list of the things you’ve learned and the actions you’ve taken. Check if they align with your description you’ve made in Step 1. If they don’t align, make adjustments.

That’s it. That is all it takes to become successful.

Maybe one more tip…

Every successful person I ever met has created a group of people around them that challenge them, and they feel accountable to. You will find many of those successful people in mastermind groups.

They are not loners but very much engaged with their family, community and business partners. They enjoy constructive criticism as it shows them the areas they can learn more about and it keeps them on their toes.

If you don’t have this group, start building it. If you need an accountability partner, have a look at our accountability buddy.

Again, it is not about having it all, but working and learning towards getting it.

I am practising this myself — and internally I am very proud of what I have achieved so far. I am still not there, but compared to where I started, I feel super successful, and I am looking forward to my future with a smile.

Wherever you are in your life today, it is your decision where you want to be.

Success is yours for the taking!
