7 Interview Tips that will get you hired in your next IT job

Prepare, Practice, Repeat

It’s all about the conversation

Participate in the conversation and make sure you develop a strong connection with the interviewer. Know their name and use it frequently as you would do while talking to an acquaintance. And make sure that you are a good listener so that you can give to-the-point answers instead of going round and round and wasting their precious time. Do mention what caught your attention about this particular job posting on the portal.

Show off your research

You should do your homework, but knowing the amount of competition in IT, so will the other candidates. So you should carefully segregate information relevant to you and the job you are applying for. Then you should tactfully place this information in your answers. Subtlety is the key and you should not come across as “showy” and yet put forward the fact that you know a lot about your potential IT employer.

Get ready on time on D-Day

The trick is to look presentable but you can’t afford to waste a lot of time on the actual day. So make sure you have chosen and ironed your interview outfit well in advance and got relevant printouts and documents ready. The tiny details can go a long way like having a nice portfolio, carrying extra copies of your CV and having a hairstyle that’s neat and suits you.

Remember on time means early!

Always reach your interview venue five to ten minutes before the reporting time. Make sure you head out early so that you can sort out any possible problems related to traffic and parking. Always visit the restroom once before the interview to check if your outfit is prim and proper.

Calm your nerves!

Body language tells a lot about self-confidence and your potential IT employer probably already has an impression about you that they have gauged from your profile on the job portal. Your job is to make that impression even better through a relaxed composure, clarity and articulation to drive your point home. You must know how to “sell” yourself and make your pitch precise and honest.

Following up is important!

Don’t forget to send you a thank-you note thanking your interviewers for the time they invested in you. These small details can go a long way in keeping your impression intact and in making sure they remember you. Make sure your thank you email reaches their inbox within 24 hours of your interview.
