Ability To Redefine

I count on my ability to redefine. When I don’t understand much, when I ask questions and the answers if any are not clear, and who am I kidding when it gets a bit trickish — I ascribe meaning to stuff and go with it. I know we have to call a spade a spade. I do. However, when I encounter some complex situations which may directly or indirectly have some influence on me, I choose the funny "All of the above" or "None of the above" options you see in objective exams. I always remember what it was I ascribed a new meaning to just in case it crops up again. It is a form of learning. Usually, within context, it starts making sense.

Context is important in all aspects, especially in language. The same word can mean a different thing in another sentence. Some words have the same spellings but are pronounced differently. These are elements of basic grammar. For writers like myself who are intuitive and connected with deep strands of humanity and various interspersed interactions, little details like how language correlates with other forms of communications cause pauses while processing.

I always like learning different ways of communicating better. I constantly work on my writing skills. Hello future editor, the dreams we have, right? There is always something to learn for a curious mind. So, within a context, you may interpret the meaning of a word a certain way. When a word or phrase is too ambiguous, you can suspect the meaning by looking at what comes before or after. This method helps sometimes.

However, the ability to redefine that I mean here is bigger than sentences. It encompasses much. It is a certain approach to life. There are cases where people make up stringent restrictions that look objective on the surface, but below they serve subjective purposes. In situations where I feel I can alter that, I don’t hesitate in redefining them. Everyone has wants. You have yours and I have mine. The ability to redefine is an advantage that comes a little bit from self-confidence, taking risks, and trying to stand up for yourself. It can also be as abstract as interpreting a sign or body language a certain way. All am saying is that I have this tool in my arsenal where I quickly look at stuff especially when I don’t have time to critically analyze and attach a meaning to it.

Usually, it takes a small effort to accomplish or learn what it is I set out to do earlier by adding or removing. Does this make sense? Language grows unless we are talking about 1984 by George Orwell where each edition of the dictionary shrank words. I believe the option of redefining lies on the other side of definition if so desired. Applying this trick creates interesting dynamics in everyday interactions.

My tendency to redefine that brought about this topic anyway is usually a straight-up decision to call this, that, and move along, especially, when urgency is involved. I always question paradigms. Yes, it can be what you are saying, but can it be considered this way too? It could also be that my perspective needs refinement. That’s okay. I keep an open mind, availing myself of opportunities to learn more and develop.

My ability to redefine has helped me a lot because some things I know now I have had to figure out one way or the other by myself. I rather recognize, redefine or define if I don’t understand, then catalog. If I happen to be wrong, I apologize and make corrections. But getting trapped by what I don’t know and sitting around waiting for it to make sense is not always how I go about things.

My confidence in doing this comes from the fact that things are connected one way or the other. Also, nobody knows it all. We all choose what makes sense to us and go the length, don’t we? How is it said, "The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence?" I don’t know if it relates well so I rather not throw in another complex one from Arthur Conan Doyle. A simpler one maybe, "Necessity is the mother of invention."

When am stuck, I tell myself, probably, the person who defined this did so according to a particular circumstance. Not always right, but if I have to make a decision, I approach it how best I can. And most times, I am not wrong either. You gotta learn to trust your guts. Usually, I call up this simple tool and put it to use. Most things exist so we can improve on them one way or the other. Somewhere else, I called this ability to redefine flip power analysis. I use it always and it works. Maybe someday, I will write about that too.
