Learning Can Be More Constant Than Change.

Hello there, it’s awesome having you read my post, I promise to always keep it exciting.

I am Rachel Abaniwo a lover of art, a budding programmer, an engineer and ROV Pilot by training. My interest spans across music, religion and social activism. You will get to know a lot more as you frequently stop in to read my posts.

Every learning experience gives a unique outcome, this outcome depends a lot on what is learned and how much interest is invested through this experience. Conventional ways of passing knowledge have become uninteresting and sometimes ineffective, if interest is not developed in the subject area.

The past year has been eventful, effective learning for me truly began during a training in ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) piloting in the first quarter of the year, I have since realized that interest in what is being learnt is one of the important factors when starting a new learning experience. ‎ROV piloting was completely new and different from what I was used to, but the success I experienced through the training was achieved by my interest and consistency, I then decided to deepen my fascination with software development.

I always assumed software development skills could be gotten only by following a strict conventional classroom curriculum, but I was wrong. I teamed up with a friend who works as a freelance software developer, I proposed that he helped me through the process of developing software development skills, while I provided administrative support and client support, it was a good deal.

The first phase of the training began by watching him work through the development of Websites. He told me about concepts he felt were important and I asked questions when I didn’t understand his methods. I encountered two major challenges, I discovered I forgot the syntax quickly and I didn’t fully understand why he applied certain concepts. This was because I had no fundamental understanding the of programming and so couldn’t put the pieces of what I learnt together.

My colleague and I decided to make some changes, this time we developed learning objectives and outcomes, we sourced for relevant materials that explicitly explained programming concepts while I worked on exercises and wrote basic codes to help develop my syntax and structuring. At this point I had developed basic programming skills, but I couldn’t call myself a software developer just yet.

Applying to the Andela fellowship seemed like I was kidding myself, reading through the application details, I was certain that the only requirement expected was an interest in software development and a passion for learning. A home study curriculum was sent to me and I was expected to study it and write an online test. I had just 2 weeks, it seemed impossible, I decided to take on the challenge and I constantly reminded myself that all required of me was interest and a disciplined approach towards the home study. I have since become convinced that learning makes anything possible.

I’ll conclude with a quote by Benjamin Franklin;

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”‎

This summarized my experience, complete learning should involve listening with the ears, exercising with the mind and consistent practice.‎ That’s all for today, If you have a learning experience please share below in the comments section. I will love to hear from you, have a great day.
